What is your philosophical world view?

The ancient Greeks brought us many great philosophers, each one bringing a slightly different view. I believe a variation of these philosophers had good views.
Socrates was right in thinking that the more learned a person became the greater ability they would have to make choices that would bring them happiness. Though I have seen that ignorance is bliss and the more learned people sometimes have the more stress, I still think Socrates was right on that point. The cynics were also right when they said people shouldn’t focus on material goods because we will not find happiness in them. Although in the 21st Century that philosophical view is quite hard to live by because of all the innovative technology we have, I do believe that if I had to, I could live without almost all my material goods (a good functioning bathroom would be by far the hardest thing to live without).

I believe that if Aristotle’s scientific views had not just gone to the Arabic cultures but came to Europe too, instead of Neoplatonism we would be more scientifically and technologically advanced. Religion in my opinion has slowed down scientific advancements and is full of flaws and double meanings that people can twist around to suit themselves. We often hear of the way a select few Muslims have twisted the Qurans words to justify killing people but a lot of Christians were hypocritical long before that. I have known devout Christians who go to church and preach to others about their sins and yet they themselves are lying and committing adultery. I believe that if people want to believe there is a god then that is fine but don’t try to convert others, especially when you are a hypocrite yourself. I have lived most of my life without believing in a god and that hasn’t made me a bad person, in fact it has made me a better person. I don't see living this life, as a prelude to some greater reward is a good way to live a life.

Semiotic analysis of one of the 9 brand pictures

The image shows a dandelion dispersing its spores so the spores will travel with the wind and grow more dandelions elsewhere. I chose the word inquisitive for this image because it reminds me of a child growing up and gathering the courage to go off and investigate the world.

The image uses the grid of thirds composition in both horizontal and vertical formats. In the horizontal format, the dandelion is positioned in the first third with the spores taking up the other two thirds of the image. This gives the spores an appearance of freedom and “flying the nest” and shows distance that slowly grows between them and the dandelion. In the vertical format, the dandelion takes up the last two thirds and the spores take up the first two thirds. This emphasises that the spores are flying higher and further away. The landscape format of this image helps to emphasis the distance between the dandelion and its spores and works better than if the image was in a portrait format.

The background is blue, which from human eyes is nature’s colour for the sky and the ocean. Blue usually conveys trust and understanding, both of which are shown in this image by the dandelion. The dandelion, like a parent, trusts its spores to be okay once they leave and understands that they must leave.  The white of the dandelion spores conveys innocence and purity, which for me helps to enforce the idea of the spores being like children growing up and “flying the nest”.

Since dandelions grow in the spring, this image was obviously taken around that time. The light is coming from one corner, which puts the time of day at, either approximately 10am-11am or 2pm-3pm.

  1. In relation to the “Semiotic analysis of one of the 9 brand pictures” post:
You have created a good breakdown of the image and what it means and you’ve shown a good knowledge on the topic of semiotics and also dandelions. Throughout the post you have used good language and grammar, which helps you make your points clearly, which is important when writing critically. You’ve also shown a powerful understanding of colour theory, which once again helps you to convey your opinions and give strength to what you’re trying to say. Another thing that you’ve done well is to estimate the time and season that the image was taken in.
