Art and Design in Context

Conversation through time

The artist that I chose at  random was Jeff Koons.

For my research I looked at his website; www.jeffkoons.com and found out a bit of background information in the biography- summary section. I also looked through his artwork on his website and found his work consists of sculptures and paintings.

I found a lot of youtube videos that helped me understand the way he thinks. Below are the links to The Jeff Koons show.

The Jeff Koons show; 3/5

The Jeff Koons show; 4/5

The Jeff Koons show; 5/5

These videos helped me see that Jeff Koons is confident, determined and strong. His father had a furniture store which is why Jeff was brought up with a traditional drawing and painting background. His first job was in the Musuem of Modern Art. He dressed in costumes like inflatable ties. Jeff Koons brought in more subscriptions for the museum than anyone else that worked there.

Jeff Koons creates things that makes him happy and his work removes his anxiety.  His artwork is also said to make some people think he's nuts at first look.

His sculptures are simplistic but he makes them in a complex way so that they stay exactly how he wants them. For example, his inflatable sculptures start off as plastic inflatable then go through a moulding process and are cast in aluminium and then painted. This is so that the sculptures won't deflate and  keep the shape no matter what the temperature.
Jeff made people realise equilibrium is deceiving. He used everyday objects to make people think of his work. He seems interested in eternity and immortality.

Sentimentality was liberating to him. His made in heaven collection was simple and natural and  his intentions was good. He wanted to show how healthy it is to embrace our sexuality because it is the survival of the species.

If his artwork it not perfect he believes people will lose faith in him and his artwork. He believes artwork takes us on a journey and he tries to make objects that people can trust in and let themselves go, give in to the experience.

His artwork hinges on pleasure in a way; sex, pleasure, fun.
He directs, oversees and guides the people that help make his work. He wants his artwork to have a life and to live on, to help people survive. He did things other artists would have thought or dared to do when he did them. He believes if people embrace who they are and follow their desires they can do anything.

Topics to focus on?
Simplicity

Immortality
Inflatables

The Second Person
Immortality- Jeff Koons wants his work to be eternal
Captain Jack Sparrow; wants to live forever
Albus Dumbledore; worked on an immortality stone
Voldemort; Would want nothing more than to live forever and gain power

Simplicity- Jeff Koons makes simple sculpture but everything has to be perfect because you will notice it if it is flawed. Jeff Koons states this and is worried about this especially when he made the 'inflatable balloon dog'.
Walli; lives a simple live

Inflatables- Jeff Koons created sculptures from inflatables
Carl Fredrickson (from Up); used balloons to move his house.

'Artist Speed Dating'
An exercise to find out how much we knew about our artists.

My question:- How has you art effected the world?

The answers I got:
Helen Chadwick- Conceptual artist. Feminist. Represents female figures in the 70s-90s. Worked on enlargements of human cells. Her art got lost in a fire.

Lucian Freud- He painted what he saw. The obese woman painting sold for the hightest price art had ever been sold for at that time. The obese woman fell asleep when he painted her and the way the light hit her made her look great.

Roy Lichtenstein- Used primary colours and cropped an image to make it what he wanted. Mostly worked on comic strips.

Eduardo Kac- His artwork gives people the realisation that they can have another life. His artwork is biological based. He mixed human DNA into the petal of a plant.

Barbara Hepworth- Work is abstract and made of natural materials such and wool. It has a meaning to it. The idea is to find a different meaning, to see something different.

Auguste Rodin- One of the first people to radicalise art. Used bronze in work and made sculptures. Interned at a art school in France with another artist.

Lev Manovich- More of a professor and lecturer than an artist. Has written three books regarding media.

Claude Monet- One of the first people in the impressionism movement. His outside art was more prominent. His art effected the way art developed. The more prominent piece of artwork is 'Impression sunrise'.

Buckminster Fuller- Architect/Inventor. Sculpture in Germany constructed with any object.

Anthony Gormley- Most of his art is 'out there'. Puts sculptures on rooftops that look like people about to jump. "His work doesn't really effect anyone"

Andy Goldsworthy- His work gives meaning, everything is technology. His work gives a sense of touch and feeling. His Arch in the middle of nowhere is a particularly interesting piece.

Stefan Sagmeister- "He hasn't effected the world so much" There is hidden content behind his work. He has made a couple of speeches about work. He is a Graphic designer/typographer.

Pablo Picasso- Cubism. Part of the modern design world. Extremely famous. Distorted women- uses cubism, it's attractive, uses colour.

Deciding on a subject and second person
Immortality (noun)
The ability to live forever; eternal life.
The quality of deserving to be remembered for a long time; timelessness: occasionally a guide book has achieved immortality.

Immortality has 3 types:-
1. Being immortal through work
2. Immortality (Fountain of youth)
3. Cursed immortality

I decided to focus on immortality and I chose Captain Jack Sparrow as my second person.

First draft of script
Ext. Bilbao- Guggenheim Museum- Early evening

A row boat hits the side of a walkway. Captain Jack Sparrow steps onto the pavement and looks at his surroundings.

Ext. Davy Jones locker- Early afternoon

Captain Jack Sparrow sits up and looks around. He sees something in the distance and squints to make it out. Cuts to Jack sprinting towards the thing in the distance.
Abruptly stops and stares up at a 40 foot dog covered in flowers.

Jeff Koons
Do you like it?
CJS spins around.
CJS
Where did you come from?

JK
I appear when someone stands in front of my puppy (smiles)

CJS
looks up at 'puppy'
Just get a normal dog mate.

JK
A normal dog won't live forever

CJS
That's a giant dog made of flowers mate

JK
Yes it is.

CJS
How is a giant dog made of flowers going to live forever? Even if it wasn't in a never ending desert, it's a giant dead dog made of flowers.

JK
But that's where you're wrong. It's not dead, it's very much alive and through it, so am I.

CJS
You're alive because the dog is here? (questioning look, points to JK then puppy)

JK
Yes

CJS
Walks up to JK and pokes him in the arm. Gives a perplexed look then walks around puppy. Walks back to JK.
What is the point of being immortal if you are stuck here?

JK
You're missing the point.
I will live forever through my work.

CJS
So you're not actually here?
Pokes JK again.

JK
Are you here?

CJS
I'm not really sure where here is (looks around)

JK
Tell me, would you want to live forever?

CJS
(Grins)
I'd love to sail the seas with a bottle of rum in one hand and my compass in the other.

JK
Forever?

CJS
(Grins)

JK
You realise you can't live forever, right?

CJS
You obviously haven't heard of the fountain of youth mate

JK
Everyone has heard of that fantasy

CJS
I was there and I can tell you, it's very much real.

JK
If it is real and you have been there, why are you not immortal?

CJS
Ah yes, there was a slight problem there. Morals got the better of me (shrugs)

JK
So you don't want to be immortal?

CJS
No, I want to be immortal and have been for a brief period.

JK
If you were immortal, why are you not now?

CJS
There was an insident with Aztec Gold

JK
Aztec Gold?

CJS
Aye

JK
Well that's not really immortality, is it?

CJS
I can tell you the Aztec Gold made me immortal, even if it was a some what skeletal affair.

JK
But would you have wanted to be cursed forever? A cursed life is not a full life.

CJS
A cursed life of eternity is better than death.

JK
Death is eventual

CJS
(Grins) Not if i can help it

JK
So, will you sail the seas searching for immortality and wasting your life?

CJS
Sailing the seas is never a waste of life, savvy?

JK
How many times have you come close to immortality?

CJS
(Speaking fast)
Well I was immortal once for all of a sword fight. I came close to taking the Flying Dutchman  as my own and thus becoming immortal and then there was the fountain.

JK
So, you lived a cursed life for the entirety of a dual and you gave up immortality twice because of (pauses and looks at him questioningly) you morals?

CJS
Aye, not my most gratifying of moments. What about you? You think you can live forever through your dog? (jerks thumb towards the puppy)

Things to think about;
Focusing too much on Captain Jack Sparrow. He is the second person, need to focus on the artist.

Notes and quotes
Start- Puppy
Middle- 3 immortalities
End- beg to differ- Good luck with living forever in your history books, I'm going to find immortality so I can sail the sees with rum in one hand and my compass in the other

And how exactly are you going to find immortality?

I'm Captain Jack Sparrow

JK looks questioningly over CJS's shoulder, CJS looks questioningly at JK, then glances behind him and back at JK. He looks behind him again at his ship
CJS
My ship!
(runs towards it)

Second draft of script
Ext. Davy Jones locker-Early Afternoon

Desert is all you can see. Captain Jack Sparrow sits up into the shot. He takes a look around then shoots onto his feet.
Cuts to CJS sprinting across the desert.
Stops abruptly and looks up with a quizzical look. In front of him sits a 40 foot dog sculpture covered in flowers.

JK
(out of shot)
Do you like it?
CJS spins around to find JK looking at him
CJS
(slightly high pitched)
Where did you come from?

JK
(smiling) I appear when someone stands in front of my puppy.

CJS
Looks up at 'puppy' then back at JK.
You really need to get yourself a girl mate. Or at least a real dog.

JK
A real dog won't live forever.

CJS
That (pause) is a giant dog made of flowers

JK
There is a bit more to it than that, but yes.

CJS
(in one breath)
How is a giant dog made of flowers in the middle of the desert under blistering heat and with no water going to last forever?

JK
The flowers don't have to survive for it to be eternal. In fact, none of it does. It is already eternal.

CJS
I think you need to look up the definition of eternal mate.

JK
Not at all. My puppy has already made history. It will live forever in peoples minds and through it, so will I.

CJS
(spoken with realisation)
Ahhhh. The history books. Not really my idea of immortality.

JK
Would you rather be cursed to live forever, never growing old and outliving all your loved ones?

CJS
My loved ones are rum and the sea, both of which I doubt will die (smiles) As for living forever, that would be a blessing.

JK
I would think living forever would get very lonely, especially once you out-live all you friends and family.

CJS
You can get new friends.

JK
Do you really think immortality would be great?

CJs
It was great when I was immortal
The immortal fight I had with Barbosa was fun.

JK
You had an immortal fight?

CJS
Aztec gold, a cursed immortality that turns you into a skeleton when the moon hits your body.

JK
So, a cursed existence that made life death

CJS
Exactly

JK
Personal immortality is always a cursed existence.

CJS
You have obviously never been to the fountain of youth.

JK
That's because it doesn't exist

CJS
Does too! I've been there

JK
And yet you are still mortal

CJS
Yes, well. There was a disagreement and the fountain was destroyed.

JK
So how are you going to find immortality now?

CJS
I'll find a way. Or travel the seas searching.

JK
Well, good luck with that

CJS
Good luck with living forever in your history books

CJS
I'm Captain Jack Sparrow, Savvy?

JK looks questioningly over CJSs shoulder. CJS looks questioningly at JK then over his shoulder and back to JK. He then whips his head back around to see his ship a little way away.

CJS
My ship!
Good luck with living forever in your history books.

CJS runs off towards his ship.

Things to think about:-
Make Jeff Koons a voice of reason on Jacks shoulder
Add about Jeff being lonely because his son is in a different country

Third draft of script
Ext. Davy Jones locker-Early Afternoon

A white sandy desert is all you can see. Captain Jack Sparrow sits up into the shot. He looks around then shoots onto his feet.
Cuts to CJS sprinting across the desert.
CJS Stops abruptly and looks up with a quizzical look on his face. In front of him sits a 40 foot dog sculpture covered in flowers.
A three inch JK appears from CJSs hair

JK1
Appears from CJSs hair and walks along his left shoulder without CJS noticing.
Do you like it?

CJS stumbles to the right as JK holds onto his hair to stop himself from falling.

CJS
(slightly high pitched)
Where did you come from?

JK regains his balance and smiles up at CJS.
JK1
I appear when someone stands in front of my puppy

CJS looks up at the 40 foot 'puppy' then back to his shoulder where JK stands gripping CJSs hair for balance.
CJS
You really need to get yourself a girl mate. Or at least a real dog.

JK1
(looking proudly at puppy)
A real dog wouldn't live forever.

CJS looks up at puppy then back at JK
CJS
That (pause to point at puppy) is a giant dog made of flowers

JK1
There is a bit more to it than that, but yes.

CJS
(in one breath)
How is a giant dog made of flowers in the middle of the desert under blistering heat and with no water going to last forever?

JK1
The flowers don't have to survive for it to be eternal. In fact, none of it does. It is already eternal.

CJS
(raises an eyebrow) I think you need to look up the definition of eternal mate.

JK1
Not at all. My puppy has already made history. It will live forever in the minds of each generation and through it, so will I.

CJS
(spoken with realisation) Ahhh. The history books. Not really my idea of immortality.

JK1
Would you rather be cursed to live forever, never growing old and outliving all you loved ones?

CJS
(Grinning) My loved ones are rum and the sea, both of which i very much doubt will die. As for living forever, that would be a blessing.

JK2
(From out of shot)
I agree with you

CJS stumbles to the left and looks down at another JK that has appeared on his right shoulder.

JK2
To live forever, being able to create my art for eternity. That would be a blessing.

CJS
looks at JK1 and points to JK2
See, he gets it

JK1
Crosses his arms
As great as creating art forever would be, i wouldn't want to live forever without my son. That would be a cursed immortality

CJS
You want to know of a cursed immortality? try taking Aztec gold and turning into a skeleton when the moon hits your body. Although having an immortal skeleton dual was fun.

JK2
Sounds awesome

JK1
(sarcastically) Yeah, a dual to the death where no one can die sounds do great.
(seriously) every dual must have an ending just like every life must have an ending.

CJS
well, in some cases that is true. (laughs) Barbosa had both at the same time.

JK2 laughs with CJS while JK1 stands unamused with his arms crossed.

JK1
(unamused) As i said, it would be a cursed immortality.
CJS
What if it wasn't cursed? What if there was no cursed skeleton immortality and instead it was a pure immortality that you and you son could have?

JK2
Well that would solve all my problems

JK1
I couldn't ask my son to stay with me for eternity. He has his own life, maybe he doesn't want to live forever. Living in history books is the best immortality I can hope for.

JK2
There's always a problem with that (jerks thumb at jk1) one.
(looking at CJS) So, how are you going to find immortality?

CJS
I'm Captain Jack Sarrow, Savvy?

CJS smiles then looks at JK1 who is looking over CJSs shoulder. CJS then turns to JK2 who is also looking over CJSs shoulder. CJS turns around to see his ship in the distance.

CJS
My ship!
(looks at JK1)
Good luck with living forever in your history books

CJS starts running towards his ship. JK1 and JK2 try to hold onto CJSs hair but lose their grip and get blown off his shoulders.

Things to think about:-
Sounds
Shorten some longer train of thoughts or make the responses short and snappy to keep the script flowing.

Creating the film
After having a conversation with my group we all decided that my script had more options for developing it into an entertaining film.

We decided to stick to the script and not change it much. We talked about different ideas we that we had and came up with a few good ones.
We discussed that we could film most of it in front of a green screen and edit the Jeff Koons onto Jack Sparrows shoulders. However, it wouldn't be Jeff Koons and Jack Sparrow that would be seen for obvious reasons.
We had a look at silhouetting the characters so that it would look more authentic than us attempting to play the roles.
We had a look at a few silhouette films on youtube for inspiration

However, that has been done quite a lot and is now not very unique.
We decided to try blacking out Jack Sparrows face and keeping the moustache so you could tell when he was talking and silhouetting the Jeff Koons and adding bits of his artwork throughout the conversation.

Here is a test for the silhouette idea and a test for the idea of blacking out Jack Sparrows face.

Once we came up with the idea for the film we finalised the entire structure of the film in the form of a storyboard.

We decided to create our film using clips from Pirates of the Caribbean so that we had more time to animate and edit.

We made sure to black out Jacck Sparrows face but keep his iconic clothing so that he is easily recognised.

We silhouetted the Jeff Koons and added ties to tell them apart.

I was a little worried that the film would pull attention away from Jeff Koons but the script is mostly about him and we have included images of him and his work.

In order to black out Captain Jack Sparrows face we had to use Adobe After Effects and use a mask. It was a tiring process. Here is a screenshot of what it looked like.

What they have done/ what their philosophies are.
How that interacts with current life

Jean Baudrillard
Has written three books on consumerism; The system of objects, For a critique of the political economy of the sign & The consumer society.

He wrote that there are four ways of an object obtaining value. The four value-making processes are;
1. The functional value of an object; it's instrumental purpose. A pen, for instance writes and a fridge cools.
2. The exchange value of an object; it's economic value. One pen may be worth three pencils, and one refrigerator may be worth the salary earned from three months work.
3. The symbolic value of an object; a value that a subject assigns to an object in relation to another subject. A pen might symbolise a students school graduation gift, or a diamond may symbolise publicly declaring marital love.
4. The sign value of an object; it's value within the system of objects. A particular pen may, while having no added functional benefit, signify prestige relative to another pen. A diamond ring may have no function at all, but may suggest particular social values, such as taste or class.

2. Perfection is a widely desired trait. Is everyone’s opinion of perfection the same? @Orlan.

Everyone’s opinion of perfection differs. So one person’s perfection must be another person’s imperfection @Orlan.

Research: Orlan changed her appearance through surgery. The most prominent change was the bumps just above her eyebrows to make her look more like Mona Lisa
http://www.orlan.eu/
The link below shows the mathematical formula for the perfect face known as the Golden Ratio. Luca Pacioli (who published a three-volume treatise on the Golden Ratio in 1509) was said to be a close friend to Leonardo Di Vinci.

3. We were caught in a book world; we are now caught in a technological world. When will we be caught out of our world? #Star Trek
Research: The link below includes the storyline to Star Trek.

4. Humans are always looking to better and upgrade themselves. When do you realise that you have gone too far? #Deus Ex

Humans are always looking to exceed and upgrade themselves. When do you realise that you have overwhelmed and destroyed yourself instead? #Deus Ex

Research: The photos below are from the campaign called Purity First who are against modified body parts.
The storyline is that you must take a highly addictive drug to keep the modified body parts/organs working.

Even wealthy people cannot afford to buy the highly addictive drug for too long leaving them homeless and begging to survive.
The Modified body parts are made out to be the greatest technological advancement yet.
But if you don't take the highly addictive drug, your body will start to reject the modified body parts/organs leaving you without an arm, blind, sometimes dead etc.
In the end, the modifications for many people are a regrettable action that has lead to suffering and will lead to more.

5. Human ashes can be used in unusual memorial ways. http://bit.ly/1cILpg8. Why do people attach their relatives to themselves after death?
-Not a manifesto statement

Human ashes can be used in unusual memorial ways. http://bit.ly/1cILpg8. Clinging to the dead’s ashes can be as bad as dwelling on the death itself.

Research: One of a few ways that ashes have been used in an unusual memorial way.
http://skinandbonetattoo.blogspot.dk/2012/07/lejre-archaological-research-center.html
I have also heard about a woman who gave her son cufflinks that had his fathers ashes in (I cannot divulge who the person is and it cannot be found on the internet).

Week 5
1. We live for tomorrow and dwell on yesterday. But why can’t we just enjoy today? http://bit.ly/1fphcUj

We live for the future and dwell on the past. But when will we learn to truly relish the present? http://bit.ly/1fphcUj

3. Teleportation is not yet possible. But wouldn’t it be great if it were? @The tomorrow people

Teleportation is not yet possible. But wouldn’t it be a remarkably outstanding achievement if it were? @StarTrek

I decided to change my statement slightly and my evidence totally to make more of an impact also in Star Trek humans created teleportation, in the tomorrow people they were born being able to teleport.

Research:

4. Pictures are said to be worth a thousand words. So are actions worth more? http://bit.ly/1jn6uBs
-My opinion

Pictures are said to be worth a thousand words. Therefore, actions must be worth a million or more. http://bit.ly/1jn6uBs

Research: SPOILER ALERT!
World Builder is a short film created by Bruce Branit.

It is about a man who creates a new world for a woman...

Who seems to be in some sort of coma.

To create a whole world for someone you love who can't experience the real world is better than any image.

5. Utopias for one person are dystopias for others. #Metropolis. When we know the consequences why do we let greed cloud our judgment?

Week 6
1. Everything involves technology nowadays, even nature. http://bit.ly/MjubiD. Is there anything truly natural anymore?

Everything involves technology nowadays, even nature. http://bit.ly/MjubiD. Why is there even a definition for ‘natural’ anymore?

Research: The link below shows that Central Park in Manhattan is not natural at all, it was planned, designed and constructed by humans.

In the past we created cities. In the future we will recreate cities. http://www.thevenusproject.com. In the present can we just enjoy our cities?
Research: The Venus Project works on the idea that it would be far easier and would require less energy to build new, efficient cities than to attempt to update and solve the problems of the old ones. It is a possibility for the future.
http://www.thevenusproject.com

4. People do not like being reminded of tragedies. http://wtcinmovies.tripod.com/chrono.html. Why can we not see the positives of them?

Research: The link below shows a trailer of Spiderman (2002) that was removed from the film because it had the twin towers in it.
http://wtcinmovies.tripod.com/2000.html

I think the idea of criminals being caught in a web between the twin towers brings hope and justice and I think it would have been a good tribute to the people who died in 9/11. In a way it would have said "The criminals responsible will be caught".

5. Erasing parts of our art to appease people may be unjustified. http://bit.ly/1lfx7ff. It’s our art, if we like it why should we have to change it?

Week 7
1. Different places present us with different emotions. Why do these emotions change when we stay in one place for too long? @MerhanNasseri

Different places present us with different emotions. Why do these emotions change if we cling to one place for too long? @MerhanNasseri

Research: This link explains Merhan Nasseri's dilemma of not having an identity and being stuck in an airport for years.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/dna/place-lancashire/plain/A33471100
He was given chances to get out of the airport but refused them. If you were stranded in a public place with very little privacy and no money to even feed yourself, wouldn't you despise that place? If you hated the place you lived would you not take any chance you could to escape it?

2. We can refurbish an old run down building and make it our own http://bzfd.it/JLVMIz. Will that change our feelings about our old building?

We can refurbish an old run down building and make it our own http://bzfd.it/JLVMIz. But is that enough to make it a home or just a renovated old building?

Research: The link below is an article about a student who bought a run-down house for $500, renovated it and made it his home.

3. Jewellery that projects us has been created @JayneWallace How many of us will sell ourselves to advertising companies.

Jewellery that projects us has been created @JayneWallace. How many of us will sell ourselves like unimaginative drones to the highest bidding advertising company?

Research: The link below is to Jayne Wallace's website. She is a contemporary digital jeweller and researcher. My work explores the potential of jewellery, digital technologies and design artefacts within meaningful spaces in people’s lives.

5. Making dull places exciting again takes a little imagination http://bit.ly/NsPVcR. The time and effort is never wasted as long as it gets at least one person to smile.

Making dull places exciting takes a little imagination http://bit.ly/NsPVcR. It’s worth the time and effort to see even one person smile.

Research: Below is a link to a project that turned a boring dull wasted space into an artistic and creative allotment that brightened up the area and made it look less run-down.

Week 8
1. Every relationship has power and power can lead to manipulation. We have seen the consequences and yet we still allow ourselves to be manipulated #TheWave

Research: The images below are shots from the trailer of The Wave.
Set in Germany. The teacher has authority over the class because he is popular with his students and he is the teacher.

The students do not think a dictatorship is possible in
Germany at present because they think people have learned from the mistakes of the past dictatorship.
The teacher gets the students to march on the spot while claiming it is a good thing, that it is "the power of unity".
Instead of just a teacher he became a leader, a person they would look to for orders instead of answers.
Instead of students, they became his soldiers. Instead of being learners, they became follows.

The teacher wanted to prove that a dictatorship was still possible and the only way to prove a theory is to experiment.
With power, it is easy to manipulate people into thinking they are doing a good thing or the right thing. We all think we are strong enough to fight manipulation but most of the time people do not know when they are being manipulated because that is how manipulation works.

2. Celebrities have power through money and contacts. Is it just the money that is causing them to be targeted as sexual predators? #OperationYewtree

Celebrities have power through money and contacts. It is the money that is causing most of them to be targeted as sexual predators’ #OperationYewtree

Research: The link below shows a lot of articles about a lot of celebrities accused of being sexual predators. All the celebrities are famous with a substantial amount of money. The victims are usually not named so targeting a celebrity to get famous is not what is happening. That leaves victims wanting compensation or justice. If it was about justice, why did they wait so long to come forward? This is especially the case for the Jimmy Savile accusers because he had died when he was accused meaning that justice could not be served.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/operation%20yewtree

3. Unemployment rates are lower but job centres have power over their money http://bbc.in/fTgYKl. Job centres will soon find any reason to stop paying the unemployed.

Research: The link below shows recent news on unemployment rates.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10604117
The link below shows the eligibility criteria for getting jobseekers allowance.
https://www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowance/eligibility
From second-hand experience I have come to learn of stories about the job centres stopping money for a lot of reasons. Some of those reasons include;
not having job searched on the correct site (although the person had done enough job searches for that week)
not arriving to the appointment on time (when the person was standing at the reception in a queue for a long time to say said person had arrived)
no decision had been made by the decision maker (and they still stopped the money)
disciplinary actions have overlapped, which should never happen!

4. Designers have the power to create whatever they want. To create something that triggers an intense response is an admirable skill #GTA5

Research: Grand Theft Auto 5 was recently one of the most bought and talked about game. Although not all the responses were good, they were all pretty intense.

The first intense news about GTA5 was on the night of it's release when a man was stabbed and robbed of the game he had queued up for hours to buy. This was not a good start for the release of the game as the media attention was tuned into the violence of the game and a man getting stabbed for it only proved the point.
http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/sep/21/man-stabbed-robbed-grand-theft-auto-5

There is also the issue of young children re enacting scenes from GTA5. To most people that is disturbing at the very least. Although that particular incident is not so much the game designers fault as it is the parents who either let their children play the game at a young age or play the game their selves whilst the children are around.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/gta-v-schoolchildren-re-enacting-rape-3136500

On the positive side, the audience that the game is meant for is defending the game vigorously. This 20-year old student states that the game also shows consequences of violence and that it's not much different from many movies.
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/31/grand-theft-auto-5-torture-violence-video-games

Age restrictions are on games and films for a good reason. If everyone followed the age restrictions then the only violence we would see because of this sort of game would be from sociopaths. I do not believe games and films can make people sociopaths, only give them an idea to make into reality.

5. No one can get away from power as it is everywhere. We should never use lack of power in one relationship to justify our power in another #X-MenFirstClass

Research: SPOILER ALERT!
In X-Men first class we see mutants feared and attacked by humans. The lack of power the mutants feel is enough to turn most of them against humans altogether.
A group of mutants want the humans to start a war between each other so that when they kill each other the mutants will not only survive but also grow stronger.
These mutants are so afraid that the humans will turn against them as soon as they find out about them that they manipulate the humans into starting that war against each other.
"They’ll fear us and that fear will turn to hatred."

"After tomorrow they are going to turn on us"

These men are holding guns to a mutant and keep doing so even after he saves them. They do this because they are afraid of them.
"Why fight for a doomed race who will hunt us down as soon as they realise their rein is coming to an end?"
"The Russians share our concern and will join a strike on all the mutants. We can end this threat for good."
They hardly know anything about the mutants. Also, the mutants saved them from starting a war between humans. But still they are afraid of them and don't understand them so they decide to kill them.
"United in their fear of the unknown"
He is talking about the humans and how they want to kill the mutants.
The humans band together and fire missiles at the mutants because they feel powerless compared to the mutants and want to kill them because of that.
"This society won’t accept us. We form our own. The humans have played their hand now we get ready to play our own"
The mutants are afraid that the humans will try anything to kill them so they choose to fight back.

Both the humans and the mutants feel scared and powerless because of each other and that leads them to think that killing the other is justified.

Week 9
1. People will usually work harder to achieve than to profit http://youtu.be/u6XAPnuFjJc. It is good that we value our achievements over something as common as money.

Research: The link below explains the truth behind what motivates us. If we are given the chance to win money by creating something then we will not usually work as hard on it. Achieving goals seems to be more important to most people than winning money in a creative competition.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc&feature=youtu.be

2. A little freedom is satisfying. It keeps people happy and creative which can benefit the economy http://bit.ly/1lVsxTM.

Research: The link below is to an Australian software companies website. Atlassian is a company which created an innovative idea for its employees called ShipIt Days.
"Every quarter, we give employees the chance to work on anything that relates to our products, and deliver it during ShipIt Day, our 24-hour hackathon. Been wanting to build that plugin, redesign that interface, or completely rethink that feature that’s been bugging you? You’ve got 24 hours...go!"
https://www.atlassian.com/company/about/shipit

3. People will soon patent everything they can http://bit.ly/1icjYAT. Freedom of business will be taken away from everyone and smaller companies will suffer.

Research: The link below is to an essay that gives us some insight into the possibilities of going crazy with patenting. The essay may be a little out of date but the concept still stands that bigger companies will get too greedy and patent all sorts of things so that they get more money.
http://www.shirky.com/writings/opensource_genome.html
We have already seen this happening in technological companies such as Apple and Samsung who had a patent war at one time. This patent war lead them to sue each other on countless occasions
http://money.cnn.com/2013/08/08/technology/mobile/apple-samsung-timeline/

4. Good artists copy, great artists steal @Picasso. With no truly new ideas anymore, our only way to create something great is to steal an idea.

Research: Pablo Picasso has a famous quote that is; Good artists copy, great artists steal.
The link below shows that this quote was morphed from a different quote that dates back to 1892. W. H. Davenport Adams said in The Gentleman’s Magazine "to imitate was commendable, but to steal was unworthy." Although the quote changed over time, changing the meaning with it, both quotes are informative in their own right.
http://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/03/06/artists-steal/

5. Everyone’s interpretations of ideas are different. Stealing an idea is good but stealing it without giving credit to the owner is criminal http://bit.ly/IyMa3j.

Research: The link below is a summary of the licenses of the Creative Commons. I think that following these licences is fair and gives the creator the chance to decide how his/her work is used once it is in the publics eye.
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

Week 10
1. Don’t write, telegraph @ElmerWheeler. If your first few words are great, you will intrigue and captivate your audience into listening.

Research: The link below is to Elmer Wheeler's website. He was a great American Salesman who was born in 1904.
http://elmerwheeler.net/
The link below tells of some of the slogans he invented for companies which increased their sales drastically. If you do not captivate your audience in the first few words you will lose their attention and interest altogether.
http://www.awaionline.com/2008/02/who-is-elmer-wheeler/

2. Like money, design is everywhere and needed in everything. The re-designed £1 coin will benefit the honest but complicate lives too http://bit.ly/1ddlseP

Research: The link below states that an estimate of 3% of £1 coins at the moment are forgeries. By redesigning the coin there will be no forgeries for at least a couple of years if not more. There is a disadvantage to the new design. Shopping trolleys take the current £1 coin and would most likely have to be redesigned if the £1 does change. Also, a lot of machines like arcade machines and ticket machines will need to be redesigned because they will not recognise the new £1 coin as a valid coin.
http://metro.co.uk/2014/03/19/thrupenny-bit-remake-edges-out-old-1-coin-4645572/

3. Humans destroying earth is inevitable. But by that time we should have designed and built our own planets #EarthGirl

Research: Humans destroying the earth is inevitable. How it will happen is not known yet. It could be because of global warming or a war. Either way humans have proved that they care more about their selves than our earth on countless occasions.
The theories of space travel and the ability to live on another planet have been spreading in stories everywhere. The book "Earth Girl" by Janet Edwards is just one of the many fictional examples of what could happen before we totally destroy our earth.
Below is a link to the description and a few reviews of Earth Girl
http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Girl-Janet-Edwards-ebook/dp/B006KWAI9K

4. Rushing designs can result in glitches. Although they can be funny for a while, glitches will always be an imperfection http://bit.ly/1dzUXLj

Research: The link below shows a glitch in the game Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. This video shows the person playing the game coming across an animal which he wants to identify. When the goat gets too close to a ladder the glitch in the game makes the goat climb the ladder (which of course is not going to happen in real life). Although it is a little amusing, it is an imperfection and it changes the game from looking serious and graphically dark into a joke.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggB33d0BLcY

5. Design cannot be just aesthetic. Without meaning, order, structure and purpose, design is just a pretty pattern. http://vimeo.com/12819375

Research: To make a design really mean something and really captivate an audience there has to be thought behind it. The design has to be planned so that you know what you want to say to your audience through it and how it will look. If a design doesn't captivate its audience then it is not doing its job.
Below is a link to a video called "Design's Role in Innovation" by the Design Council. It includes different people's definition of design which are all correct. In my opinion this video shows people that design is not as simple as they think and that there is a lot involved in design.

 Materials Workshop

The orange material is soft and I added the beads to compliment it. I wanted the person reading it to feel the softness of the orange material but also feel interested in the beads.

I wanted to make this one with a 3D effect to emphasize the "out of this world". I used the golden material because it felt like a technical component.

I used staples and pushed them through the card. They are a little sharp which gives an uncomfortable feeling and I positioned them in a slightly jail bar format.

I used double sided tape to give the reader an uncomfortable feeling. The tape picked up random bits of dirt and fluff which added to the uncomfortable

The glitter paper I used felt more uncomfortable to touch than sandpaper so I used that and added screws to add to the ruined and unnatural feeling

Most of the card is covered with a soft but not quite smooth material and one corner is covered with bubble wrap as a "fun" contrast

The material used is soft and fluffy. I wanted the reader to feel comfortable and not want to stop touching it, like the feeling you get in the morning where you feel so comfortable in your bed that you don't want to get up.

I used 4 strips of soft material in one corner so that the reader feels that and then feels the plain card. The idea is to get the reader to go back to the corner to feel the material again

I used velvet strips because some people find velvet an uncomfortable fabric to touch but some find it soft and comfortable.

I used soft blue material and added screws at the side as a contrast.

I used corrugated card with lumps underneath to make the reader feel uncomfortable.

I used a contrast of glittered fabric and ripped up Styrofoam packing peanuts as a contrast.

This material is uncomfortable on the patterned bumpy edge side.

I used Styrofoam packing peanuts and kitchen towel as a contrast. The packaging peanuts bumped up and the kitchen towel felt dull and boring.

I used two totally different feeling materials to emphasize that real and virtual lives are quite different

I put a bit of netting material over the card to give the obscured feeling

I added masking tape on top of each other to create a lumpy feeling that is attached to the card
